To Managers Seeking Consultants

Do you have someone you want on your team in a contract or consulting role? And you wish you could refer them to a firm that would maximize their benefit from being a contractor? Do you have people who won't work for you because the traditional consulting firms take too much of your client bill rate?

More importantly, as a manager, do you realize that "the best people outperform the worst by about 10 to 1 and the best outperform the median by 2.5 to 1?"(2) Given a little creative license to this example: Most managers have perms they didn't hire and wouldn't have hired. Which does not imply you are stuck with people that fall into the worst category or even those that are below median. Also given, the budgetary cost of a consultant, after factoring in employee benefits and employer taxes, is about 10% more than the full cost of a perm. So, crunching numbers behind the scenes, adding about 22% to your personnel budget you can almost double the productivity of a 5 person group by adding 1(one!) contractor. If you have a 5 person group, but currently have one open perm slot, by filling it with a contractor you are only adding 2% to your personnel budget by filling that 5th slot with a contractor. And you still almost double your group's productivity.
